Week 3 Reflection

The concepts from this week's class was about the courage to create art and show it off as it is without worrying about perfection.  The concept of including art in all other areas of the curriculum was discussed by including rock painting in math, literacy, dramatic play, science, and social studies activities.

In order to paint the rocks we were given a purpose for 3 of them while 2 rocks were open-ended choices but we still had to use our own creativity to decide what to paint.  With some of the rocks, I thought more about how I wanted to paint them before I began painting but with some of the rocks, I began painting and just decided in the moment what would be painted.

This activity can be integrated into a classroom in many ways.  Allowing the children to paint the rocks can help them express their creativity as well as having a rock museum for the children to explain their creations to others can help boost their social and emotional skills.  The children can use their courage to share while giving others opportunities to appreciate the work that other students put into their rock paintings.

In order to make this activity accessible to students with different abilities or backgrounds I would first base it off of the students themselves.  If a student struggles with the mess or sensory aspect of the activity I would put the paint in a box and let them roll around in the paints or give them markers to color an already painted rock.  I would use different paintbrushes for students who struggle with fine motor skills.  Throughout all of this, I would be sure to give students less instruction allowing them to freely paint their ideas.

  1. I really enjoyed how you emphasized the importance of courage in this lesson. It is so important to support the students and their ideas so they feel comfortable showing their creativity. I love the idea of putting paint and the rock in a bag so the student does not have to touch anything they are uncomfortable with!

  2. I really love the rocks that you painted! They didn't need be to very detail oriented, but you were able to freely express your creativity through your rocks and that is what is important. I really loved your idea about putting the rocks into a box and putting paint in it for a child to use in case they have sensory issues. I have never thought of that before and will definitely remember for future use in my classroom.
