Week 6 Reflection

I was not in class but I was able to make my food craft at home.  I used some twizzlers, pretzels, goldfish, and marshmallows to make an underwater scene.  All of these ingredients were things that I found in my cupboard and could have easily used a variety of foods.  I used a cookie and twizzler to make an octopus with the helpful input of my 9 year old.  These types of activities can help students with creatively thinking to plan out what they want to create with food as well as giving more opportunities to explore along with other lessons.  Children can work on their fine motor skills as well as giving them a chance to relax while creating with different materials than they are used to.  The activity could be incorporated into other lessons about animals with a focus on vocabulary that go along with the animal or even the habitat that they live in.  This activity could also be used to give examples of food groups or colors and shapes.  Students could explore their ingredients with a lesson on their 5 senses or could count the ingredients for a math lesson.  Snacks and foods could be introduced from other countries to give students a lesson on other parts of the world as well as creating a scene to reflect those cultures.

This week also involved a trip to the Martha Gault Art Gallery which showcased art that used different materials.  The linear photography from Katherine Mickle caught my eye because of how the pictures would change as I walked by.  I especially liked the photo with the tree that changed between seasons.  The scenery in those photos included vibrant colors that stood out to me from far away.

  1. I really loved your underwater food activity. When I went to the art gallery, I also found the picture of the tree changing very unique and different. The car also peaked my interest as well.

  2. I love your idea about how you could teach children the environment that animals live in using food, that is so creative. I thought the linear photography was also very cool.
